Looking to get started learning to drum, or to improve your basic abilities and move more towards Intermediate skills? This class is appropriate for Beginner to Intermediate players, on ANY STYLE of Hand Drum or Percussion Instrument! This is a fun introduction to the foundational skills and concepts of Worldbeat Hand Drumming including hand technique, listening, polyrhythmic structure, and relating to Clave and Downbeat.
Our goal is to impart correct hand technique for the instruments and teach you to think polyrhythmically, allowing your expressive and improvisational skills to organically evolve. Bring your own drum or use one of our class drums!
We will focus on getting you the basics of technique on your instrument, and then we will work on various drills, rhythmic counting and voicing techniques, Call-and-Response exercises, and then we will construct a unique polyrhythmic orchestration each week, teaching basic worldbeat cadences/orchestrations and the principles of transformation that underlie the great rhythm traditions!
This allows us to to teach the Musicality of Community Drumming. The traditions of Worldbeat percussion evolved to facilitate a village of players cooperating to create coherent collaborative rhythms, where everyone uniquely contributes and everyone’s contribution is felt. It is this concerted effort that gives these rhythms their community-building and healing potential.
