These pendants are made with Copper Enamel!
Copper Enameling is the process of applying powdered glass to an acid-cleaned copper surface and then firing it in a kiln past the melting point of the glass (around 1500°F). It is an intensely elemental and creative process and it’s a rush taking the red-hot fused metal and glass pieces out of the kiln!
The glass melts and fuses to the copper creating a uniquely organic finished piece. The heat is intense enough that the uncovered back of the piece oxidizes and forms “fire scale” which brushes off to reveal an organic burn pattern in the metal! On many of our pieces we choose to leave the back uncovered instead of counter-enameling as a reminder of the intense heat.
This necklace is part of our Artisan Collection and is a one-of-a-kind expression; this is the only one of this design that we will create so you are guaranteed a unique piece!
